CCCN as part of its social intervention has started a project with a theme ‘the development of Jukwa Abodo lies on the Children’s Education’ in Abodo a suburb of Jukwa in the Twifo Henmang Lower Denkyira District in Central Region of Ghana. This project is in collaboration with the Abodo Youth Organization, and the Traditional Rulers of the community.

Abodo Youth Organization is the few educated youth that have volunteered to help organize classes for the children in the community.

The traditional rulers are the custodians of the land of Abodo, and have agreed to provide land and assistance for the establishment of classrooms, computer laboratory (ICT center), library, and children’s welfare center.

Education transform lives and changes the face of a community. Every community development hangs on children’s education.

Knowledge is power, a driving force for successful life, and a life changer. Knowledge is acquired through education (formal and none formal).

Abodo has a population of almost one thousand five hundred (1,500) including children. Out of this estimated population, only 1.5% has tertiary education, 2% have secondary education, 5% have Junior High School education, and about 8% had primary education, 83.5% had never entered school classroom.

Education is not limited to classroom work but extended to include on the job or vocational and technical training or apprenticeship. Meaning both formal and non-formal education is very important.

Education for the children and the youth of Abodo will change lives and transform the community. Education is therefore viewed as human right since it contributes to the reduction of both absolute and relative poverty. At least basic education for all helps to alleviate poverty by helping poor and vulnerable people improve their lives. Parents with some level of education raises healthy families.

Children and Youths with basic skills and knowledge can read, write, and reason to make choices about how to behave in their respective families and the community.

In Abodo and its surrounding areas there are no school blocks, computer laboratory (ICT center), library, and children’s welfare center. In addition educational materials, teaching aids, basic learning equipment, and other educational resources are lacking even though the Youth and Traditional Rulers are willing and ready to support children’s education.

Justification/Support:

CCCN reached out to the community elders (custodians or rulers) to enquire of the problems the Abodo community is facing and how it can be dealt with. The elders presented to CCCN problems in children’s education and pledged to corporate with CCCN to deal with the problems. Abodo Youth Organization is the few educated youth that have volunteered to help organize classes for the children in the community.The elders have made land available for children’s educational projects such as school blocks, computer laboratory (ICT center), library, and children’s welfare center.

Project Goals.

The objective for this project is not different from CCCN objective for its causes or objects. Our objective for this project is to create a suitable environment, restore hope and opportunities in the people of Abodo Community. Education is the backbone of every community development and CCCN, Abodo Elders and volunteer Youth Organization are poised to help Abodo Community children receive basic, secondary and vocational or technical education and training.

The project is aimed at achieving the following, to:

  • Provide educational materials to all children
  • Build classrooms for the children
  • Construct information and communication center
  • Construct library
  • Construct children’s welfare or counseling center
  • Resource the Abodo Youth Organization to provide free classes for the children.
  • Bridge the gap between the vulnerable or disadvantage children of Abodo community and the advantage children in towns and cities.

Problem Analysis:

Abodo has a population of almost one thousand five hundred (1,500) including children. Out of this estimated population, only 1.5% has tertiary education, 2% have secondary education, 5% have Junior High School education, and about 8% had primary education, 83.5% had never entered school classroom.Increase of teenage pregnancy because of high illiteracy rate.

The reasons why 83.5% of the people of Abodo are illiterate or have not had formal education or vocational and technical training are as follows:

  • There is no basic school, library, children’s welfare center, and ICT center.
  • Poverty
  • The children cross to other communities to school and this accounts to absenteeism

Program Implementation Strategies

CCCN has officially opened a branch office at Abodo Junction to monitor the day to day activities of the volunteers.

On the 13th to 16th December, 2018 was the official launching of ‘the development of Jukwa Abodo lies on the children’s education’, stakeholder’s workshop, community gathering, and opening of the office. CCCN brought educational experts and professionals to organize a workshop for the elders, religious leaders, assembly members, and others on children’s education and community development. In addition, the whole community gathered for education on the project and the impact it will have on individuals and the community.

The CCCN in collaboration with the Traditional Rulers or Elders, and volunteer Youth Organization have planned to use the community market/meeting place as a temporary place for vacation and evening classes for the children.

The Elders of the Abodo Community have made land available for the construction of community school, library, ICT center, children counseling and welfare center. Abodo Youth Organization (the volunteer youth) would facilitate the learning in classrooms; take charge of the various facilities under the supervision of CCCN team and the community elders.

CCCN has teams of professionals made up of health, psychiatric, professional counselors, educationists, and management and administration teams that would organize workshop for the volunteers and community elders quarterly and also help in review and evaluation of all activities.

The CCCN team and volunteers would embark on community radio broadcasting on the importance of education and also shall organize educational programs on children’s rights for education and entrepreneurship for parents and guardians for at least twice every year.

On 1st January, 2019, the Abodo Youth Organization organized excursion to Kakum National Park which is 60Km away from Abodo for the children. On that same date talented kids show was organized in the evening. All these programs were organized as part of our strategies to help the children receive the right for formal education (including technical and vocational education).

The construction of the facilities would be in phases and could be commence if donor agencies donate to sponsor the project.

CCCN team in consultation to stakeholders of the project would review/evaluate the methods and implementation strategies from time to time for proper thing to be done.

Expected Results for Project Delivery:

The people of Abodo community would become more aware on the need for every child to have the right to access education. We expect all donor agencies, international volunteers, educationists, philanthropists, and UN to get involve.

  • Donor agencies are expected to partner to donate for effective and successful project.
  • Gives children and youths of Abodo Community the opportunity to get involved in community service on a regular basis, with projects to choose from almost daily.
  • To build better relationships between the elite and the ordinary people of Abodo.
  • To prevent and control social vices or deviant behaviors in the society.
  • To bridge the gap between the vulnerable or disadvantage children of Abodo and the advantage children in cities and towns.
  • To reduce or eradicate teenage pregnancy and street children in the community.
  • To eradicate or reduce poverty in the community.

Main activities to be conducted:

The project has started with workshops, administrative strategies, acquisition of land for various projects, and sensitization program and also evening classes is about to start at the community market. CCCN has made learning materials available to be distributed to all children for the start of evening classes.

The following construction work would be considered:

  • Classroom blocks with latrines/toilets
  • Computer laboratory for the children and the community.
  • Library for the children and the community
  • Children welfare and counseling center

These constructions expected to be completed within the proposed period between 3 to 10 years.

We expect that at least the first three years of the project would be the completion of the permanent classrooms and ICT center. Then the library and children welfare and counseling center would follow.

Proposed Project Costs:

The Custodians or Traditional Rulers (Elders) and Youth Organization of Abodo community have been able to provide the following for the project:

  • Land for the constructions have been made available
  • A number of professionals and artisans have made themselves available to look after the project.

Monitoring and Evaluation:

CCCN team of professionals, community elders, and other hired professionals would be employed to monitor and evaluate the project on regular basis.

Donor and partner organizations automatically become part of the monitoring, and evaluating team of the project.
